Kalsubai — Standing on Top of Maharashtra
Kalsubai is the roof of Maharashtra. At 1,646 metres above sea level, this peak in the Sahyadri range near Bhandardara holds the distinction of being the highest point in Maharashtra and one of the highest in the entire Western Ghats. Trekking to the summit of Kalsubai is a rite of passage for serious hikers in the region — a full-day challenge that rewards with 360-degree views stretching across the Sahyadri ranges, the Bhandardara reservoir, and on crystal-clear days, a vast expanse of the Deccan plateau.
Located about 165 km from Pune and 170 km from Mumbai, Kalsubai is achievable as a day trip for early risers or a weekend getaway combining it with a night at the Bhandardara campsite. The peak holds a sacred Kalsubai Devi temple at the summit, drawing both trekkers and pilgrims. During Navratri, thousands of devotees make the pilgrimage to the temple, creating a unique spectacle of faith at altitude.

Best Time to Visit
October–February: The ideal season. Clear views, cool temperatures (10-18°C at the summit), and comfortable trekking. Nights at Bhandardara are cold but beautiful.
Monsoon (July–September): Dangerous for Kalsubai. The iron rod sections become extremely slippery. Recommended only for very experienced trekkers with guides. The views though are stunning — clouds at eye level.
Summer (March–May): Start before 5 AM. Hot and dry, but visibility is excellent.
Trek Route
Starting Point: Bari Village (~850m elevation)
The trail climbs steadily through scrub vegetation and rocky terrain:
- 0-2 km: Moderate slope through forest; well-worn trail
- 2-3.5 km: Steeper rocky terrain; several iron rods and ladders fixed in rock face
- 3.5-4.5 km: Summit ridge; Kalsubai Devi temple at the very top
Elevation Gain: ~800 metres from Bari village Total Distance: ~4.5 km one-way Time: 3-4 hours up; 2-3 hours down
The iron rod sections (roughly 20-30 minutes of climbing) require both hands and care. They are the crux of the trek. Once past these, the summit ridge is a walkable path.
