Tikona Fort — The Pyramid of the Sahyadris

Tikona Fort, aptly named after the Marathi word for "triangular", rises like a pyramid from the shores of Pawna Lake in the Western Ghats. Standing at an elevation of 3,500 feet (1,067 metres), this perfectly conical hill with its flat summit is one of the most visually striking forts near Pune and Lonavala. A moderately easy trek combined with stunning views of the Pawna Lake below makes Tikona a favourite for beginners, families, and weekend trekkers.

Located about 60 kilometres from Pune and 110 kilometres from Mumbai, Tikona is perfectly positioned for a day trip or a weekend escape when combined with Pawna Lake camping. The fort has a rich Maratha history — it was one of the forts in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's defensive chain in the Sahyadri range and played a role in the strategic control of the Bhor Ghat trade route.

The summit of Tikona offers panoramic views of Pawna Lake, the surrounding Sahyadri peaks, and on clear days even Tung Fort and Lohagad Fort across the valley. The geometric beauty of Pawna Lake's blue waters against the green hills makes this one of the best viewpoints in the region.

How to Reach Tikona Fort

From Pune by Road: Take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway towards Lonavala, then exit at Kamshet. From Kamshet, take the road to Pawna Lake and continue to Tikona Peth village (the trailhead). Total distance: ~60 km, approximately 1.5 hours.

From Mumbai by Road: Take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, exit at Kamshet or Lonavala. Follow signs to Pawna/Tikona Peth. Total distance: ~110 km, about 2-2.5 hours.

From Lonavala: Tikona Peth is just 20 km from Lonavala town via the Kamshet road.

Best Time to Visit

Monsoon (July–September): The hillside turns vivid green, clouds swirl around the summit, and Pawna Lake reaches its full size. The most dramatic season. Carry waterproof shoes.

Winter (October–February): Clear skies, excellent visibility, and comfortable temperatures make this the most popular season. Sunrise treks in winter are especially memorable.

Summer (March–May): Start very early (before 6 AM) to avoid the heat. The views are clear but the ascent can be exhausting in the afternoon sun.

Trek Route

Starting Point: Tikona Peth village (parking available)

  • Trail distance: ~2 km one-way
  • Elevation gain: ~600 metres
  • Duration: 1.5-2 hours up, 1-1.5 hours down
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate — the final section has iron rods fixed in rock for handholds

The trail begins through farmland and gradually enters rocky terrain. The path is generally well-worn and visible. The final stretch near the summit requires using iron rods/pins fixed in the rock face — this section, while slightly exposed, is manageable for most people and takes about 10-15 minutes.

At the summit, a small plateau holds the Trimbakeshwar Shiva temple, ancient water cisterns, and the ruins of bastions. The 360° views from here are outstanding.
