25 Unique & Hidden Places Near Pune — Off the Beaten Path
Tired of Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar crowds? Pune's surroundings have dozens of destinations that most people drive past without stopping. These 25 places offer the same (often better) scenery with a fraction of the footfall.
Hidden Waterfalls
1. Devkund Waterfall (110km) A turquoise jungle pool most tourists never find. Requires a 2km forest trek from Bhira village. Ask anyone in Pune where the best waterfall is — serious travellers say Devkund.
2. Kataldhar Waterfall (100km) Hidden near Matheran. A significant drop into a rocky pool, rarely visited because it requires a proper off-trail trek.
3. Tamhini Roadside Falls (55km) Dozens of unnamed waterfalls appear along the ghat road in monsoon. Pull over anywhere and walk 50 metres into the forest — you'll find a private cascade.
4. Dhom Dam Spillway, Wai (90km) When the Dhom Dam overflows in monsoon, the spillway creates a spectacular multi-tier waterfall. Almost no one knows about this.
Ancient Caves & Archaeological Sites
5. Karla & Bhaja Caves (65km) 2,000-year-old Buddhist rock-cut caves near Lonavala. Karla has one of the best-preserved chaitya halls in India. Far less visited than Ajanta-Ellora, equally impressive.
6. Bedse Caves (65km) Smaller than Karla, but walking distance from a quiet village with almost no tourists. The cave carvings are remarkably intact.
7. Kondana Caves, Karjat (90km) 16 Buddhist caves from the 1st century BCE beside a monsoon waterfall. Accessible via Bhivpuri Road station.
Offbeat Forts
8. Gorakhgad Fort (90km) A perfect cone-shaped hill with a cave temple at the base. The summit is small and photogenic. Fewer than 50 visitors on a typical weekend — unheard of for a fort near Mumbai-Pune.
9. Dhak Bahiri Cave Trek (90km) Ends at a cave shrine with a terrifying exposure (literally hanging over a cliff). Very short trek but extremely dramatic for adventurous types.
10. Hadsar Fort (90km) Three-headed fort rarely mentioned in travel guides. Complex ruins, excellent views, no crowds.
11. Naldurg Fort (290km, near Solapur) A massive 16th-century fort with a unique water fort design. Almost entirely forgotten by travellers.
Unique Natural Landscapes
12. Andharban Forest Trail (55km) A 13km descent through a dense forest from Pimpri Dam to Bhira village. The forest canopy closes over the trail creating an "dark forest" effect — this is what the name means in Marathi.
13. Kaas Plateau — Valley of Flowers (120km) Every September, this UNESCO heritage plateau near Satara blooms with hundreds of wildflower species. A rolling meadow of colour. Visit September only.
14. Malshej Ghat Flamingos (130km) Thousands of lesser flamingos gather at Pimpalgaon Joge dam during monsoon. The combination of pink birds and green monsoon hills is completely unexpected.
15. Purushwadi Fireflies (190km) Every June, a tribal village near Akole glows with fireflies at night. Local families host travellers in their homes. One of the most unique nature experiences near Pune.
Village & Cultural Experiences
16. Purushwadi Village Stay (190km) Maharashtra's most celebrated rural homestay experience. Tribal village life, forest walks, firefly evenings, and home-cooked food.
17. Wai Temple Town (90km) Ancient town on the Krishna River with beautiful old temples, river ghats, and regular use as a Bollywood film location. Completely authentic.
18. Ozar Temple (105km) One of the Ashtavinayak Ganesh temples — this one in a quiet village setting near Junnar, with ancient architecture and a peaceful atmosphere.
Scenic Drives Less Taken
19. Tamhini Ghat Road (55km) One of India's most beautiful ghat roads — but most people only drive the first 5km. Continue all the way to Mulshi and you're in a different world.
20. Bhor Ghat Heritage Route (50km) The old Pune-Mumbai road before the expressway. Passes through Khopoli, old British-era railway tunnels, and dramatic valleys.
21. Mahabaleshwar Backroads to Pratapgad Instead of the highway, take the forest road from Mahabaleshwar to Pratapgad Fort. Barely any traffic, stunning forest scenery.
Under-the-Radar Adventures
22. Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary (120km) A small sanctuary near Murud rarely covered in travel guides. Leopards, deer, and a surprisingly good forest interior.
23. Savitri River Gorge, Poladpur (165km) The Savitri River cuts through a dramatic gorge near Poladpur on the way to the Konkan. A spectacular roadside view almost no one stops for.
24. Korlai Fort & Village (130km) A Portuguese fort where the local community still speaks a 400-year-old Creole Portuguese dialect. One of the most unusual cultural encounters in Maharashtra.
25. Supa Dam (160km) A large dam on the Bhima River rarely visited by tourists. The backwater area is beautiful and completely uncrowded.
