Harihareshwar Travel Guide: The Devghar of the Konkan Coast

Harihareshwar is one of Maharashtra's most sacred — and most beautiful — coastal destinations. An ancient Shiva temple crowns a headland between two pristine beaches, with the Arabian Sea crashing on three sides. It's spiritual, scenic, and still relatively off the tourist radar.

Why Visit

  • Harihareshwar Temple: One of the Panchakorshi pilgrimages of Konkan
  • Dramatic setting: Temple on a cliff between two beaches
  • Clean beaches: Harihareshwar, Diveagar, and Shrivardhan beaches
  • Bhairavgad: A small fort ruin with sea views
  • Unspoiled coastline: Far fewer visitors than Alibaug or Kashid

Getting There

From Pune

  • Drive via Pune–Mumbai Expressway → Mahad exit → Shrivardhan → Harihareshwar
  • Distance: ~195 km, 3.5–4 hours

From Mumbai

  • Drive via NH66 → Mangaon → Shrivardhan → Harihareshwar
  • Distance: ~200 km, 4–4.5 hours (coastal route more scenic)

No convenient train — driving is the best option.

The Temple

The Harihareshwar Devasthan is a 16th-century Hemadpanthi-style temple with black stone shikhara. It sits on a rocky promontory called "Brahmagiri" with the sea on three sides. The temple complex also includes smaller shrines to Kalbhairav, Keshav, and Pushpadanta.

The temple is one of four in the "Panchakorshi Yatra" — a sacred pilgrimage circuit of Konkan Shiva temples. Darshan timings: 5:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

Beaches

Harihareshwar Beach

The main beach beside the temple. Black volcanic rocks, clear water, and gentle waves. Not ideal for swimming but perfect for walks and watching the sunset over the sea.

Diveagar Beach (10 km)

A long golden-sand beach, cleaner and less visited. Good for swimming in calm patches. MTDC resort here.

Shrivardhan Beach (14 km)

The largest beach in the area, 2 km long. Relatively calm, good for families. Small town with basic amenities.

Where to Stay

  • MTDC Harihareshwar: Government resort, basic but well-located (₹2,000–4,000)
  • Temple trust dharamshalas: Very budget, for pilgrims (₹200–500)
  • Private guesthouses: Limited options in town (₹1,000–2,500)
  • Diveagar: Better resort options 10 km away

Nearby Attractions

  • Velas Beach (60 km): Olive Ridley turtle nesting beach — the conservation festival runs February–March
  • Bankot Fort (25 km): Portuguese fort at the Savitri river mouth
  • Mahad (35 km): Access town with Savitri river views

Tips

  • The road from Mahad to Harihareshwar is narrow — drive carefully, especially at night
  • MTDC resort rooms book out fast on weekends; reserve ahead
  • Carry cash — very few ATMs and no card acceptance in most places
  • The sunset from the temple promontory is exceptional — time your visit accordingly
  • Combine with Diveagar and Shrivardhan into a multi-beach Konkan road trip
